Amid this weekend’s frigid temperatures, pop superstar Rihanna took to New York Fashion week to debut an icy new collection with Puma.
Drawing inspiration from Japanese street culture, the first ever Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection mixed cultural influences with gothic overtones. Encompassing footwear, apparel and accessories for both women and men, the Fenty Puma Collection blurred the line between genders in much the same way that has marked Rihanna’s personal, trend-setting style.
Standout items included a full-length kimono robe, a velvet bomber jacket and tear-away tricot track suits. The collection played with proportions and volume, mixing exaggerated long sleeves on tops and jackets, voluminous hoodies and crew necks, and skin-tight designs with skin-baring corseting.
“This collection is not only a representation of who I am and how I dress, but also pushes the boundaries of what I wanted to create with Puma,” said Rihanna, who serves as Puma’s brand ambassador and women’s creative director. “I wanted to take Puma to a new place with something unpredictable and unexpected. It’s Japanese street culture with a haunting twist. I played with texture and silhouettes and all of the fabrics are luxurious. I reinterpreted the traditional in my way.”
Of course, it would not be a Puma show without footwear, and Rihanna took the opportunity to debut the Fenty Trainer, a futuristic training shoe set to hit stores worldwide on Feb 26. Meanwhile Rihanna’s Fur Slide slippers will debut in April, followed by the return of the infamous Puma Creepers in May. The full range of clothing, footwear and accessories will be available worldwide starting in September.
