An empire state of mind was reflected as clear as crystal-blue water in Nautica’s Spring ’16 swim collection, presented Wednesday at Skylight Clarkson Square as part of New York Fashion Week: Men’s.
While at first glance the assortment looked more Montauk than Manhattan—seaside staples in an all-American color palette—on closer inspection the vibe was unabashedly New York.
Taking inspiration from the spot where the water meets the city, menswear head Steve McSween drew on the 32-year-old brand’s DNA (seafaring sportswear) and updated it with a wave of architectural iconography. Standout styles included swim shorts showcasing patterns inspired by the Art Deco ornamentation and eagle “gargoyles” of the Chrysler Building, while other prints were reminiscent of the intricate tilework of the city’s subway stations, and a nylon fisherman jacket took a cue from bright yellow taxi cabs.
There were plenty of sweaters on show, too, ranging from a classic Breton stripe in black and electric blue to a cage-knit cardigan with a thick shawl collar to a marled V-neck. Elsewhere, a contrasting double-strip detail appeared on a number of styles, like the arm of a navy cardigan or on shorts of varying lengths.
