Denim is no longer just for pants. Accents of the classic fabric have been popping up everywhere from high heels to clutches to Volkswagen’s 2015 denim-trim Beetle. Mosevic, a start-up design company, believes the next step for denim is sunglasses.

Mosevic is a collaboration between Jack Spencer and Alex Boswell, two friends from Cornwall, England with a background in product design. They see denim as a defining feature of culture and are looking to build on the fabric’s heritage.

To create their sunglasses, the designers infuse layers of denim with resin to create three-dimensional forms they call “solid denim.” The exterior surfaces preserve the recognizable denim texture, while the inside of the frames are polished to a smooth finish. The glasses are outfitted with lenses in dark gray and brown, produced by Carl Zeiss Vision.

The Summer/Autumn 2015 line will offer three unisex styles in three color schemes. The flagship model is the Cassini, while the Celsius offers a squarer frame, and the Kepler presents a rounded style with a keyhole bridge. All three styles are available in colorways, indigo, heritage and stone black.

After developing Mosevic Solid Denim sunglasses for four years, Spencer and Boswell have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their production. They aim to start batch production after the funding period with the first lot of glasses released in early-mid July. The designers have set up a workshop and a team in Cornwall, where they will continue to make all their glasses by hand when they begin production. When each batch is finished, the designers will pass them on to their fulfillment company, Core Fulfillment, to ship the products.

Mosevic’s Kickstarter went live on May 5 with the goal of reaching £5,000 ($7,835) by Sunday, January 2015. At the £70 ($110) pledge rate, backers receive a pair of Mosevic Solid Denim sunglasses when the first shipments go out in July.

This is Spencer and Boswell’s second Kickstarter-funded design project, following their launch of Nodus in 2013, presenting the Access Case with micro-suction technology for iPhones and iPads.
