For a denim line that has long focused on performance, it’s not surprising that DL1961 comes out punching with a fall line packed with sporting influences.

The brand is embracing the luxe and edgy athletic trend seen on Fall ’15 runways, incorporating the use of bold side stripes, zipper detailing and coated denim in understated shades of black and gray. Two new styles (the Florence Marathon and Emma Speed) are inspired by athletic tube socks, featuring sporty stripes along the leg or across the calf.

Official fireproof Formula One zippers detail the collection’s coated jeans and moto styles, for a touch of on-the-track authenticity. And in a subtler nod to sport, the DL1961 has fabricated a number of styles in full French leather, including a red leather skinny pant, a black leather skinny and a black leather slouchy pant. The result is a collection that borrows athletic references while maintaining a level of sophistication, instead of veering into casual territory.

As for performance, the brand has been working to improve its fabric for better shape and retention. For the fall collection, DL1961 has incorporated its signature DLpro fabric into more styles than in previous seasons. DLpro fabric is a blend of cotton, XFIT Lycra, and Lenzing ProModal fibers, a combination designed to allow four-way stretch and reduce sagging. The label has also incorporated customer feedback on fit and fabric to create the high-rise Farrow Jean, designed to give the wearer a slimmer silhouette.

The brand is placing bets on a coated denim fabric it created, one that is fully machine washable. The fabric has been successfully tested in a two-hour washing process that resulted in no fading, aging or damage to the coating. This innovation has allowed the DL1961 to offer more coated denim styles in the fall collection than in previous seasons, and will remove hesitation in consumers about purchasing a style perceived as difficult to care for.

Despite the overall emphasis on athleticism and technologically advanced fabric, DL1961 is also starting to look back to the ’70s, like many other denim and sportswear brands. The fall collection includes ripped, vintage-inspired blue denim and a pair of half-suede jeans, updated for Fall 2015 with modern fit and fabric.

The Fall ’15 collection will be released online and in stores incrementally over the course of two months, from early July into early September, and will be followed up in mid-October with a Holiday collection.
