In its second year, I-SKOOL, the denim talent award promoted by Isko and Creative Room, is expanding the unique opportunities it offers up-and-coming design students.

On the final day of Denim Première Vision in Barcelona (May 27-28), the show’s director Chantal Malingrey announced the launch of a new award, “Promising Talent by Denim Premiere Vision.” The winning student, selected by Denim Première Vision and Creative Room, will receive an internship with the Denim Première Vision design team.

Malingrey said denim is not taught enough in design school, especially when you consider the huge volume of denim product in the market. Last year’s winner, and now a designer for Alexander McQueen, Francisco Sanchez-Canete Fernandez agreed. Through I-SKOOL, he said students have a chance to discover an industry they don’t learn enough about in school. “It’s where the new talent meets the industry,” he added.

Isko I-SKOOL was founded last year as a channel to shape young talent from design schools worldwide through two separate contests: one for design students and one for marketing students. The aim of the design award is to find groundbreaking concepts, dedication to the denim world, washing and treatments applied to garments, and attention to body shape. Participating students work with Creative Room on developing innovative, as well as sellable, jeanswear collections.

For the second edition, 17 schools participated, up from six in its inaugural year. Together, Denim Première Vision and Creative Room have narrowed down the pool of young designers to 10 students from around the world. Students developed their designs for four moods: Bohemian Blue, Couture Denim, Active Jeanswear and Future Fit. Highlights in the collections include Casper Wener’s shoe pant, Kseniia Novakoskaia’s shawl collar coat and Nina Riedl’s sustainable take on futuristic urban wear. The winner will be announced during a special celebration July 2 in Milan.

Isko marketing director Marco Lucietti said I-SKOOL not only reaffirms Isko’s commitment to its community, but also its commitment to invest in future talent. “It is a different way to look at the future of our industry,” he said.
